Via Francigena Medieval Pilgrimage Route

Medieval pilgrimage route Canterbury to Rome

Moderate

The Via Francigena traces the footsteps of Archbishop Sigeric’s 990 AD pilgrimage from Canterbury Cathedral to St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, crossing 1,900 kilometers of medieval tracks, Roman roads, and mountain passes. The route threads through England’s chalk downs, crosses the English Channel, then climbs through French vineyards, Swiss Alpine passes like the Great St. Bernard at 2,473 meters, and descends through Italy’s hill towns to the Eternal City. Key waypoints include Reims Cathedral, Canterbury Cathedral, and the hospice at Great St. Bernard Pass.

This is moderate overlanding with technical sections on ancient cobbled streets and narrow Alpine switchbacks. High-clearance vehicles recommended for rougher sections, particularly through the Swiss and Italian mountains. Passable year-round except for Great St. Bernard Pass (closed November-May). The route requires advance planning for border crossings and urban navigation through historic city centers. The reward is following one of Europe’s most significant historical routes, with abundant camping, hostels, and cultural sites spanning four countries and over 1,000 years of pilgrimage history.
