Andalusian Sierra Nevada Mining Circuit

Iron ore routes to Europe's highest peaks

Expert

This route follows the mule tracks and mining roads that hauled iron ore from the Sierra Nevada’s high-altitude mines down to Granada’s foundries during Spain’s industrial boom. Starting from Capileira in the Alpujarras, the trail climbs past the abandoned Minas de Alquife—once Europe’s largest open-pit iron mine—before threading through technical switchbacks to reach the 3,000-meter mark near Mulhacén base camp. The descent into Güejar Sierra demands precise line choice through loose shale and ancient mine tailings that can avalanche under vehicle weight.

This is expert-level driving requiring serious ground clearance, rock sliders, and experience with steep mountain terrain. The high-altitude sections demand acclimatization and the technical descents will test your nerve and equipment. Best tackled July through September when snow clears the high passes—winter attempts are suicide missions. No special permits needed but notify Guardia Civil of your route since rescue operations are complex at altitude. Fuel and water in Capileira before you commit. You’ll earn bragging rights over some of Europe’s most dramatic high-altitude terrain and genuine mining history.
