Russell Glacier Terminus Overlook
The Russell Glacier terminus sits about 25 kilometers east of Kangerlussuaq along a rough gravel road, offering one of Greenland’s most accessible views of an active glacier face. The overlook provides dramatic views of the ice terminus, meltwater lakes, and the raw power of glacial processes. During summer months, you can hear the glacier groaning and witness small calving events as chunks of ancient ice break away into the proglacial lake.
The access road is rough dirt and gravel requiring high-clearance vehicles, though 2WD is usually sufficient in dry conditions. Best visited during the brief Arctic summer from June through August when the road is passable and daylight extends nearly 24 hours. Bring layers – even in summer, glacier winds can be brutal.
