Sermilik Fjord Ice Road
Winter-only fjord crossing to remote settlements
When Sermilik Fjord freezes solid from February through April, it becomes Greenland’s most spectacular ice highway. This 45-kilometer seasonal route runs from Tasiilaq across the frozen fjord to traditional hunting settlements like Tiniteqilaaq, passing massive icebergs frozen into the sea ice. The route requires crossing pressure ridges where ice sheets collide, creating 3-meter walls that need careful navigation or winching. GPS coordinates are critical since whiteout conditions can hit without warning.
This is extreme-level driving requiring specialized Arctic vehicles with studded tires, emergency shelter systems, and ice rescue equipment. Local Inuit guides are essential — they know ice conditions and safe crossing points that GPS can’t tell you. Best accessed February-March when ice is thickest, but conditions change daily based on wind and current. No official permits, but register with local authorities in Tasiilaq. The reward is accessing some of Greenland’s most traditional settlements where dogsledding and subsistence hunting still define daily life.
