Arctic Circle Trail

The Arctic Circle Trail cuts through the heart of Greenland’s tundra, connecting the international airport at Kangerlussuaq to the coastal town of Sisimiut via 165 kilometers of unmarked wilderness. This isn’t a vehicle trail in the traditional sense — it’s a hiking route that requires supply caching or resupply flights, but 4×4 vehicles can access multiple points along the route via mining roads and research station tracks. The Kangerlussuaq River crossing at kilometer 38 marks the halfway point where most overlanders establish base camps.

This is an expert-level expedition requiring Arctic-rated vehicles, satellite communication, and extensive cold weather gear. Summer window runs June to September, but weather can turn deadly fast with temperatures dropping below freezing even in July. No permits required, but you’re completely self-sufficient — nearest rescue is hours away by helicopter. The payoff is accessing Greenland’s raw interior where few vehicles have ever been, crossing landscapes that haven’t changed since the last ice age.
