Sinaloa Sierra Madre Logging Road

Extreme mountain logging roads through jaguar country

Expert

This remote logging road climbs from Mazatlán’s coastal plain into the Sierra Madre Occidental’s cloud forests, reaching elevations over 8,000 feet through active timber operations. The route begins at El Palmito and follows old logging tracks through dense pine-oak forests where jaguars still roam. Technical sections include steep rocky climbs, creek crossings during rainy season, and navigation around massive logging trucks hauling timber down narrow mountain roads.

Expert-level trail requiring experienced drivers and full-size 4WD with low range, recovery gear, and aggressive tires. Rainy season (June-October) makes this nearly impassable with washouts and mud. Dry season (November-May) offers spectacular mountain vistas but nights drop below freezing. Fuel up in Mazatlán—no services for 200+ kilometers. Coordinate with logging operations for safe passage times. Reward is pristine wilderness camping and some of Mexico’s most dramatic elevation changes.
