Trans-Sierra Madre Occidental
Mountain expedition through mining country
This legendary route climbs from sea level at Mazatlán through the heart of the Sierra Madre Occidental, following ancient mining roads and logging tracks to Durango. You’ll cross the Tropic of Cancer climbing toward Concordia, then navigate technical switchbacks through cloud forests where the road clings to canyon walls above thousand-foot drops. The route passes abandoned silver mines near Copala and crosses the Continental Divide at over 9,000 feet, where temperatures can drop 40 degrees from the coastal plain.
Extremely difficult terrain requires experienced drivers with modified 4WD vehicles, winch capability, and comprehensive recovery gear. Rainy season makes sections impassable, so stick to November through April. Carry food and water for 4-5 days, spare parts, and satellite communication. This isn’t a trail — it’s an expedition through some of North America’s most challenging mountain terrain, but the reward is experiencing Mexico’s mining heritage in landscapes few outsiders ever see.
