Erta Ale — Lava Lake Caldera Rim Camp
Erta Ale is a shield volcano in the Danakil Depression, and its summit caldera has held a lava lake for decades. Overlanders bed down in the open, on the rim or in the low stone windbreaks near the caldera. You sleep on thin mats on basalt with the orange glow lighting the sky, and the ground stays warm. Expect no water, no toilets, no shade, and no cell signal. Pack every liter you’ll drink, plus a headlamp and wind layers. The nights are cooler than the furnace-hot days, but the wind comes through hard.
You don’t wander into this one. Access runs off the Berhale and Hamed Ela corridor, then over rough lava-field track that wrecks tires and cooks drivetrains. Go in a convoy with a local guide, an armed escort where the authorities require one, and the permits arranged through the Afar regional tourism office. The volcano’s activity and the region’s security situation both change, so verify current conditions before you commit. Best window is roughly October through March. Summer here is brutal.
Have a dirty day.
