Milford Lake Dam Access Technical Route

Army Corps spillway access through limestone ledges

Difficult

Built by the Army Corps in the 1960s, these service roads descend 200 feet through Permian limestone to reach the Republican River below Milford Dam. The route follows the old construction access used to build the spillway, with switchbacks carved into bedrock and loose shale sections that’ll test your tire compound. Watch for the concrete debris piles from the original construction—some chunks are truck-sized and mark the steepest descents where you’ll need low range and hill descent control.

Difficult rating for the technical limestone ledges and loose rock sections, though it’s only 4 miles total. Requires high clearance 4WD with skid plates—this isn’t a place for mall crawlers. Spring runoff can make the bottom section impassable, so stick to late summer through fall. No official permits needed but Army Corps patrols regularly. Camping prohibited due to flood control operations. The payoff is accessing prime catfish holes below the dam that most anglers never see, plus some of the best limestone geology in Kansas.
