Molesworth Road — Hanmer Springs to Blenheim via Jollies Pass and the Acheron

NZ's longest backcountry road through a working station

Easy

Molesworth Station is New Zealand’s largest farm, and the road through it follows the old cattle muster route between Canterbury and Marlborough. Starting from Hanmer Springs, you climb Jacks Pass and follow the Clarence and Acheron valleys into big, open tussock country. Past the Acheron Accommodation House, the road tops out at Jollies Pass at about 1,347 meters. It then runs down the Awatere Valley, with braided gravel rivers, tawny hills and the occasional Kea or Hereford to keep you company. Fuel and food are scarce between towns, so top up before you commit. Expect a long, dusty day of corrugated gravel, a few fords, and wind that makes you appreciate good tires.

This is an Easy road for experienced drivers, but remote country punishes carelessness. A high-clearance 4WD or sturdy AWD with proper tires and a full-size spare is the right call. The road is only open in summer, roughly from late October to April, and the gates are closed in winter, so check the current season with DOC before you go. Cell service is basically nonexistent in the middle. Camp only at designated DOC sites and respect the working station: leave gates how you found them, and don’t leave your trash. You get a classic slice of the South Island backcountry, on a road with real history under it. Have a dirty day.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Subaru or 4Runner do Molesworth Road?

Yes. It's graded Easy, and a stock AWD or 4WD with decent ground clearance handles it fine. Expect corrugations, loose gravel, and a few shallow fords. Carry a full-size spare, because sharp rock and a 200+ km stretch with no help make flats the most common problem.

Is Molesworth Road open in winter?

No. The road is seasonal and closed to the public through winter because of snow and station operations. The usual window is roughly November to April, but gate dates shift year to year, so check the DOC Molesworth Recreation Reserve page before you go.

Do I need a permit or pay a fee to drive Molesworth Road?

No permit is needed to drive through during the open season. The road runs through a working station inside a DOC recreation reserve, so you have to stick to the road and follow gate and stock rules. Camping is only allowed at designated DOC campsites, which carry a small nightly fee.

What's the hardest part of the Molesworth drive?

Jollies Pass, at 4,419 ft, is the toughest stretch. The gravel is narrow and rough with steep sections and exposed drop-offs, and the corrugations get worse near the top. The Acheron River crossings are shallow in dry weather but can rise and get muddy after heavy rain.

Is there fuel or cell service along Molesworth Road?

No to both. It's 129 miles (207 km) with no fuel, no shops, and no cell coverage, so fill up in Hanmer Springs or Blenheim before you start and tell someone your plan. Stay on the road, give way to stock and station vehicles, and make sure you're through the gates before dark.
