Gyp Hills Scenic Byway Extended Loop

Red rock canyons hidden in the Kansas prairie

Moderate

The red rock bluffs rising from the prairie south of Medicine Lodge look more like New Mexico than Kansas, and that’s exactly what makes the Gyp Hills Extended Loop worth the drive. This technical circuit follows ranch roads and BLM two-tracks through the most rugged terrain in the state, navigating steep-sided arroyos carved through red sandstone and white gypsum beds. The route connects multiple historic homestead sites and passes through the abandoned townsite of Aetna, where crumbling foundations mark another failed prairie settlement.

This is moderate to difficult territory requiring high-clearance 4WD and careful route-finding skills through unmarked ranch gates and wash crossings. Spring rains turn the clay-rich soil into slick gumbo that’ll strand even the best-equipped rigs, so stick to dry conditions April through October. Dispersed camping is allowed on BLM sections, but respect private land boundaries and carry plenty of water – the nearest services are 40 miles away in Medicine Lodge. You’ll earn some of the most unique geology and solitude Kansas has to offer.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Jeep Wrangler handle the technical sections?

Yes, but you'll need good ground clearance and 4WD engagement for the rocky canyon approaches and creek crossings. Stock suspension is adequate but aggressive tires help with traction on loose gypsum.

Is the trail accessible in winter months?

Winter access is possible but not recommended due to flash flood risk in canyons and muddy conditions on clay sections. April through October offers the most reliable conditions.

Do I need permits to camp in the Red Hills area?

No permits required for dispersed camping on BLM land, but respect private property boundaries which are clearly marked. Follow Leave No Trace principles in this fragile ecosystem.

What's the hardest part of this loop?

The descent into Salt Fork Canyon requires careful line selection over loose rock and narrow shelf road sections. Take your time and use a spotter on the steeper switchbacks.

How far should I plan between water resupply points?

Carry at least 2 gallons per person as creek water isn't reliable year-round and Medicine Lodge is your only resupply for the full 38-mile loop. No services once you leave town.
