Aldeyjarfoss — Bárðardalur Basalt Falls Overnight Stop

Dispersed Camping

Aldeyjarfoss sits on the Skjálfandafljót river at the top of Bárðardalur, where the pavement quits and the highland road starts. The water drops into a blue-green pool framed by dark basalt columns, and it’s one of the best-looking falls in the north. There’s a gravel parking area at the end of the road with a short walk to the viewpoint. Plenty of F26 drivers stage here the night before pushing south across Sprengisandur. Expect wind, open ground, no shade, no services, and the white noise of the falls all night.

Know the rules before you park. Icelandic law bans overnighting in camper vans, trailers, or vehicle-based setups outside designated campsites, and only allows a single night of tent camping on unfenced, uncultivated land. Respect the landowner and keep the ground intact. Take every scrap of trash and human waste out with you. The access is Road 842, a gravel road south from the Ring Road near Goðafoss. F26 itself is 4×4-only, opens mid-to-late June, and closes with the first heavy snow. Check road.is for conditions and verify the camping rules locally before you commit.
