Flint Hills Discovery Route
Last intact tallgrass prairie overland experience
The Flint Hills Discovery Route threads through 200 miles of unbroken tallgrass prairie on century-old ranch roads and section lines between Cassoday and Council Grove. You’ll cross Spring Creek at least six times on limestone slabs, navigate around century-old stone fence posts, and climb Chase County’s highest ridges where you can see uninterrupted grassland to every horizon. The route connects working cattle ranches, abandoned homesteads, and the historic Z Bar Ranch headquarters.
This moderate route requires high-clearance 4WD for creek crossings and muddy sections after rain. Spring through early summer offers the best wildflower displays but also the wettest conditions. Carry plenty of water and fuel — services are 50+ miles apart. The payoff is experiencing the last 4% of original tallgrass prairie in North America, exactly as it looked when the first settlers arrived. Private land sections require permission, available through the Nature Conservancy.
