The headquarters sits on the edge of Hackberry Lake, one of dozens of natural lakes scattered across this 70,000-acre refuge. Clean visitor center with maps, restrooms, and displays on sandhill ecology. The real draw is the wildlife — massive waterfowl migrations in spring and fall, plus year-round prairie grouse, deer, and the occasional elk.
Access roads are gravel but well-maintained. The auto tour route loops through prime habitat but can get muddy after rain. Best wildlife viewing early morning and late afternoon. No camping on the refuge, but it’s a solid day-use stop when running the Cowboy Trail or exploring the Valentine area.
