This natural spring bubbles up from the base of Ash Hollow’s limestone bluffs, the same water source that sustained Oregon Trail emigrants for decades. Clear, cold water flows year-round through a grove of massive cottonwoods, creating an oasis in the shortgrass prairie. The spring runs about 2-3 gallons per minute — enough to top off tanks but you’ll wait a while for a full fill.
Access via a short walk from the Ash Hollow Fossil Trail parking area. The spring is unmarked but obvious once you’re in the trees. Water quality is generally good but filter as always. Gets busy during trail interpretation events in summer.
Historic Oregon Trail spring still flowing strong.
