Snake River Falls

Nebraska's tallest waterfall plunges 75 feet into a remote canyon accessible only by a rugged backcountry trail.

Hidden deep in the Niobrara River country, this dramatic waterfall drops 75 feet over a sandstone cliff into a narrow canyon lined with ancient cedars. The falls run strongest during spring snowmelt and after heavy rains, but maintain flow year-round from springs. A rough 2-mile trail leads from the parking area down into the canyon, requiring scrambling over loose rock in places.

Access road is 8 miles of two-track from Valentine, requiring high-clearance and dry conditions. No facilities, no cell service, and the trail isn’t marked beyond the first quarter-mile. Bring GPS and plenty of water — the hike back up is a lung-buster in summer heat.
