Mount Oso Lookout

Fire Lookout

Mount Oso Lookout sits at 3,000 feet elevation in the remote eastern Diablo Range, accessible via a rough dirt road that climbs through oak woodland and chaparral. The active fire lookout tower provides sweeping views west across the Central Valley to the Coast Range and east toward the Sierra Nevada on clear days. It’s a working facility during fire season, so respect any restrictions.

The access road requires high-clearance 4WD and can be quite rough, especially after winter rains. Plan on 45 minutes to an hour of driving from the nearest pavement. Best visited during cooler months when fire restrictions are minimal and the tower may not be actively staffed.
