Pioneertown Mountains Preserve Road

Pioneertown Mountains Preserve Road links the quirky Western movie set town of Pioneertown to the high country around Big Bear, crossing some of the most scenic and challenging terrain in the San Bernardino Mountains. The route follows old mining and logging roads through mixed desert and montane forest, with the notorious Granite Maze section at mile 12 featuring house-sized boulders and mandatory spotting. You’ll gain nearly 4,000 feet climbing from Joshua tree country into ponderosa pine forests.

This is advanced intermediate territory demanding high-clearance 4WD with armor and tow points. The granite sections are unforgiving and several vehicles get stuck annually. Forest Adventure Pass required, and the route is typically closed November through May due to snow. Cell service is nonexistent for most of the route. What makes this special is the dramatic ecosystem transition and access to some of Southern California’s most remote high desert camping. Pack winter gear even in summer—temperatures can drop 40 degrees from start to finish.
