Mormon Rocks Fire Road earned its reputation the hard way—multiple rocky ledges and off-camber sections that have claimed more than a few oil pans over the decades. This old fire access route climbs through chaparral-covered hills above Cajon Pass, offering glimpses of the ancient Mormon Rocks formation that gave early pioneers nightmares. The crux comes at Devil’s Backbone section around mile 6, where you’ll thread between massive granite outcroppings on a narrow shelf road that demands respect.

Solid intermediate difficulty requiring high-clearance 4WD with skid plates and recovery points—the granite here doesn’t forgive mistakes. Adventure Pass required for Angeles National Forest access. Best run spring through fall when fire restrictions aren’t in effect. Cell service is spotty but improves on the ridges. What you get is classic SoCal mountain wheeling just an hour from LA, plus access to some of the best dispersed camping in the San Gabriels. Pack extra water—the desert climate is deceptive up here.
