Judith River Road (Highway 541)
Badlands highway to the Missouri River Breaks
Judith River Road stretches 60 miles through some of Montana’s most isolated ranch country, connecting the wheat fields near Stanford to the wild Missouri River Breaks National Monument. This paved-but-rough state highway follows the Judith River valley through rolling prairie punctuated by sandstone buttes and deep coulees where outlaws like Kid Curry once hid out. The road passes historic homesteads, working cattle ranches, and fossil-rich badlands before ending at the Charlie Russell National Wildlife Refuge, where the Missouri River cuts through white cliffs and cottonwood bottoms.
Easy driving on deteriorating pavement suitable for any vehicle, though watch for cattle guards, wandering livestock, and sudden weather changes. Open year-round but winter brings brutal winds and whiteout conditions across the open prairie. No permits required, but much of the surrounding land is private ranch property – respect gates and fences. Fuel up before heading out; services are non-existent for 100 miles in any direction. This is quintessential Big Sky Country where you’ll drive for hours seeing more antelope than people.
