Lava Beds National Monument Skull Cave

Descend into California's largest lava tube cave where ice formations persist year-round in the cool volcanic underground.

Skull Cave plunges 40 feet into the earth through a collapsed lava tube ceiling, creating a natural ice box where frozen formations last well into summer. The cave earned its name from animal bones found scattered across the floor, likely creatures that fell through the opening and couldn’t escape. Metal stairs and platforms provide safe access to the ice-filled chamber, where temperatures stay near freezing even when surface temps hit triple digits. The cave connects to Symbol Bridge and extends over 1,900 feet total.

Located off Cave Loop Road in Lava Beds National Monument, the cave requires sturdy shoes and warm clothing. Bring multiple flashlights or headlamps as the cave is completely dark beyond the entrance. Winter access depends on snow conditions on the access road from Highway 139.
