This three-story adobe and hay bale mountain covered in bright acrylic paint and biblical messages is the life’s work of the late Leonard Knight, who spent 28 years building this roadside attraction. The entire structure is made from local clay, straw, car tires, and thousands of gallons of donated paint, creating a psychedelic monument to love and faith that’s become an icon of California’s desert counterculture.
Located just outside Slab City, it’s accessible year-round but blazing hot in summer. No admission fee, but donations are welcomed. The site can get crowded with tourists and Instagram photographers, especially during cooler months. Parking is informal dirt lots around the base.
