Deer Valley Road

High desert crossing to forgotten mining country

Moderate

Deer Valley Road cuts a seldom-traveled 28-mile route through the heart of the Inyo Mountains, connecting Highway 178 near Ridgecrest to the remote Saline Valley beyond. This high-desert crossing climbs through Joshua tree forests and pinyon pine before cresting Cerro Gordo Pass at 8,200 feet, where mining ruins dot the landscape and panoramic views stretch across the Owens Valley to the Sierra Nevada. The road drops dramatically into Saline Valley, passing the abandoned Cerro Gordo silver mine that once shipped $17 million in bullion.

Plan on moderate difficulty with rocky sections, steep grades, and potential washouts that demand high-clearance 4WD and careful line selection. The route’s remote nature requires self-sufficiency—carry extra water, food, and recovery gear since help is hours away. Best traveled October through April when desert temperatures stay reasonable and winter storms haven’t closed the high passes. You’ll gain access to Saline Valley’s hot springs and some of California’s most untouched desert wilderness.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Tacoma handle Deer Valley Road?

Yes, a stock Tacoma with high clearance 4WD will handle this moderate trail fine. The main challenges are loose rock sections and a few steep climbs, not technical obstacles.

Is Deer Valley Road passable in summer?

Not recommended due to extreme heat at lower elevations and potential afternoon thunderstorms. October through April offers the best conditions with cooler temps and stable weather.

Do I need any permits for Deer Valley Road?

No permits required since it's on BLM land. It's free to drive and camp dispersed along the route.

What's the hardest part of this trail?

The steepest climb gains about 1,200 feet over 3 miles through loose shale and granite sections. Take your time and use low range for traction control.

How far can I drive without cell service on Deer Valley Road?

You'll lose cell service within the first 5 miles and won't regain it until you reach the Saline Valley or return to Ridgecrest. Plan for complete communication blackout for the entire 28-mile route.
