McWay Falls

Iconic 80-foot waterfall plunging directly onto a pristine Big Sur beach, accessible via a short coastal trail.

This postcard-perfect cascade drops from granite cliffs onto the sand at McWay Cove, creating one of California’s most photographed scenes. The 80-foot fall flows year-round, fed by McWay Creek, and the overlook trail offers stunning views of the purple sand beach below. Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park protects this stretch of coastline, where redwoods meet the Pacific.

The viewing area sits just 0.6 miles from the parking area on a paved trail. Beach access is prohibited to protect the fragile ecosystem. Parking fills quickly during peak season, and the coastal fog can roll in without warning, obscuring views.
