Hole-in-the-Rock Road Dispersed Camping

Remote BLM dispersed camping corridor through slickrock country leading to Lake Powell's legendary geological formation.

This 57-mile dirt road through Grand Staircase-Escalante cuts across rugged slickrock terrain with numerous pullouts and camping spots scattered along the route. Most sites offer zero amenities but deliver serious solitude among red rock formations and desert washes. Popular spots fill up during spring and fall, but you’ll find something even on busy weekends.

Road deteriorates as you head southeast — high-clearance recommended beyond mile 20, though passenger cars can handle the first stretch. No water anywhere along the route, and cell service is nonexistent. Winter can bring snow and impassable conditions.
