American Basin Dispersed Camping

High-alpine dispersed sites above treeline with wildflower meadows and 14er access near Lake City.

American Basin sits at 12,000+ feet elevation in a glacial cirque above Lake City, offering some of Colorado’s most spectacular alpine dispersed camping. Multiple primitive sites dot the basin floor among wildflower meadows, with stunning views of Handies Peak and other San Juan summits. The area fills quickly during wildflower season (mid-July through August) and on weekends when peak baggers arrive early. No facilities or water sources—pack everything in and out.

Access via rough 4WD road (Cinnamon Pass Road) from Lake City, impassable until late June most years due to snow. Sites are exposed above treeline with afternoon thunderstorm risk. Weather changes fast at this elevation—be prepared for freezing temperatures even in summer. Fire restrictions typically in effect; check current conditions before heading up.
