Scattered dispersed sites along Forest Road 105 (Hagerman Pass Road) offer solitude in the Sawatch Range. Most sites are small pullouts in aspen and spruce forest, accommodating 1-2 vehicles each. The road follows the old Colorado Midland Railway grade, creating relatively level camping spots with good drainage.
The eastern approach from Leadville is easier than the western side from Basalt. Road conditions deteriorate above Turquoise Lake, requiring 4WD for the full crossing. Many campers stay on the Leadville side rather than attempting the full pass. Open June through September, with early and late season snow common.
