Bandelier National Monument Juniper Campground

High-altitude basecamp among ancient Pueblo ruins where thousand-year-old dwellings hide in canyon walls just minutes from your tent.

Juniper Campground sits at 6,066 feet in the pinyon-juniper forest above Frijoles Canyon, putting you within walking distance of Bandelier’s most famous cliff dwellings. The campground has 94 sites spread across three loops, with picnic tables, fire rings, and decent restrooms but no hookups or showers. Sites vary from tight spots for smaller rigs to pull-throughs that can handle larger RVs. Summer fills up fast with families exploring the ruins, but shoulder seasons offer cooler temperatures and smaller crowds.

The real draw is stepping out your door and hiking straight into 800-year-old history. Main Loop Trail leads to Alcove House, where you’ll climb wooden ladders into actual cliff dwellings. Winter can bring snow and sub-freezing nights, while summer days push into the 80s. Reservations required May through October, and they go fast during peak season.
