Hontoon Dead Creek Primitive Campsites

Secluded backcountry camping accessible only by canoe or kayak, perfect for overlanders seeking total isolation on the St. Johns River.

These primitive sites sit on elevated hammocks along Dead Creek, accessible only by paddling from Hontoon Landing State Park. Each site has a fire ring and basic latrine, but you’re hauling everything else in by water. Expect Spanish moss, gators sunning nearby, and absolute silence after dark.

Sites book fast during cooler months when bugs are manageable. No potable water, no trash service — pack it all out. The paddle from the main park is about 2 miles through narrow, winding creek channels that can get shallow in dry season.
