Mursi Tribe Village — Omo Valley Living Culture and Lip Plate Ceremony Viewpoint

Point of Interest

The Mursi homeland sits in and around Mago National Park, south of Jinka along the track toward the Omo River. Visiting a Mursi village is raw, unfiltered cultural contact — no tourist infrastructure, no fences, just ochre-painted warriors, decorated women, and AK-47s slung over shoulders as casually as walking sticks. Small fees are paid per photo taken, and the community decides who enters. Go with a local guide from Jinka — this is not optional, it’s mandatory for access and safety. Expect dust, dogs, children, and the real thing.

Villages shift seasonally with cattle movements, so your Jinka guide will know which settlement is accessible. The track from Jinka into Mago is corrugated and becomes deeply rutted in the wet season (April–June). High-clearance 4WD minimum. Don’t expect cell service past the park gate. EWCA entry and guide fees apply at Mago gate.

Last of the lip plate culture — Omo's living edge.
