Jinka Research Centre Campground — South Omo Zone Overland Basecamp
The Jinka Research Centre compound — often called the Jinka Agricultural Research Centre camp — is the most consistently used overnight stop for overlanders rolling into the South Omo Zone. Basic but functional: expect a flat dirt compound with tent and vehicle space, pit latrines, and the ability to get cold beers and simple food from nearby guesthouses. It sits in Jinka town itself, making it the last real resupply, fuel, and vehicle-check point before you drop south toward Mago National Park or west toward Turmi and the Omo River corridor. The vibe is dusty, straightforward, and social — you’ll likely share the yard with NGO vehicles and other overland rigs.
Access is paved into Jinka from Arba Minch and Key Afer. Confirm the compound is accepting vehicles when you arrive — management has shifted over the years and access isn’t guaranteed without a direct ask. Fuel in Jinka is available but can be sporadic; carry reserves. Best dry-season window is October through April. Rainy season turns the tracks south into serious mud.
Last real base before Mago and the Omo.
