Ørnevegen — Eagle Road Hairpins Above Geirangerfjord
Ørnevegen — the Eagle Road — is the final descent into Geiranger from the east, dropping roughly 620 metres through eleven tight hairpin bends cut directly into the mountainside above the fjord. From the viewpoint at the top bend, you get the full scene: the turquoise water far below, the Seven Sisters waterfall across the valley, and cruise ships the size of apartment blocks looking like toy boats. It’s genuinely one of the great overland road moments in Europe — not because it’s hard, but because it earns its reputation every single time.
The road is paved and open to all vehicles but is snowbound November through May, sometimes later. Pull-offs are tight and get mobbed in high summer — arrive early morning or evening to have the bends to yourself. No services on the road itself; fuel up in Åndalsnes or Stranda before you drop in.
11 hairpins, straight into the fjord.
