Engineer Mountain — San Juan Skyway Summit Viewpoint

Point of Interest

Engineer Mountain rises sharp and unmistakable above US-550 between Silverton and Durango, peaking at 12,968 feet. From the Coal Bank Pass pullout at roughly 10,640 feet, you get a full broadside view of the peak’s tilted sedimentary fins — a geology lesson you didn’t sign up for but won’t forget. This is a free roadside stop, no permit needed, and the pullout can handle rigs with trailers. It marks the transition from the high alpine out of Silverton into the mixed conifer country dropping toward Durango.

Best light is morning — afternoon clouds build fast on the peaks and obscure the summit by 2 p.m. in summer. The pullout sits on paved US-550 but the surrounding terrain is classic San Juan Forest high country. Late May through early October is the window before snowpack makes Coal Bank Pass unpredictable. If you’re running the La Plata Mountain or Missionary Ridge routes, this is a solid orientation point before or after your dirt time.
