Rainbo Beach Campground — Havasu National Wildlife Refuge
Rainbo Beach sits on the California shore of the Colorado River inside the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge, roughly 15 miles south of Needles. It’s a proper developed camp — fire rings, vault toilets, and cottonwood shade that actually works against the desert heat. Sites fill fast on winter weekends when the snowbird RV crowd rolls in from Arizona, but midweek it’s quiet enough to hear the river. This is where you top off water, check tire pressure, and make sure your rig is sorted before dropping onto the Mojave Road corridor heading west toward Piute Spring.
Access is via Needles Highway south from Needles — paved all the way to the refuge boundary, with a short dirt spur to the beach. High-clearance 2WD handles it fine in dry conditions. Summers are brutally hot (115°F+), so the October–April window is the move. Check with BLM Needles Field Office for fire restrictions, which tighten fast in dry years.
