King Edward River Crossing — Kalumburu Road Wet Season Ford
The King Edward River crossing on the Kalumburu Road is the real test piece of this stretch of the Kimberley. It’s a wide, rocky-bottomed ford with a genuine current in the wet and build-up seasons — depth varies dramatically depending on recent rainfall and time of year. In the dry season (roughly June through October) it’s manageable for a capable 4WD with a snorkel, but in the shoulder months it earns its reputation. Rock ledges, a strong pull downstream if you miss your line, and boulder-strewn approaches mean this isn’t a place to blunder through in a loaded rig without reading it first.
Walk it before you drive it — full stop. There’s a small campsite on the northern bank that makes this a natural staging point. Mobile coverage is essentially zero out here. Check crossing conditions with the Mitchell Plateau Ranger Station or via HF radio before committing. 4WD with high clearance and a snorkel is the minimum; recovery gear and a spotter are non-negotiable in anything above low-dry conditions.
Kimberley's gatekeeper ford — walk it first.
