Mitchell Falls Campground — Wunambal Gaambera Country
Sitting on the plateau above the Mitchell River system, this DBCA-managed campground is the last stop before the walk-in to Punamii-unpuu (Mitchell Falls). It’s a proper designated site — cleared areas, drop toilets, and fire rings — but this is still remote Kimberley: no power, no drinking water on site, and no comms. Bring every litre you need. The camp fills hard during peak dry season (June–August) as it’s one of the most sought-after destinations on the Kalumburu Road, so rock up early or pre-book through Parks and Wildlife WA.
Access requires a valid Wunambal Gaambera Country Entry Permit (purchased online ahead of time — no permit, no entry). The final approach from the Kalumburu Road junction involves roughly 90 km of rough, corrugated dirt. High-clearance 4WD is mandatory. Trailers must be suited to serious corrugations. The walk to the falls is around 8.5 km return — do it early before the heat builds.
Kimberley's best falls — earn it first.
