Kalumburu Road — King Edward River Northern Flats Dispersed Camp
Pull off on the northern bank of the King Edward River along the Kalumburu Road and you’ve got a proper Kimberley river camp — sandy flats, big paperbarks and ghost gums for shade, and the sound of the river running through rock pools. It’s a well-known overnight among overlanders pushing north toward Mitchell Falls and Kalumburu. No facilities whatsoever. Fires can be lit outside declared season but check DBCA restrictions before you spark anything up. Crocodile country — swim only in flowing, clear water and check pools before you get in.
Access via Kalumburu Road, a rough, corrugated dirt road passable to high-clearance 4WD only. The crossing itself can run deep after heavy wet-season rain — check conditions at Derby or Kununurra before committing. Season runs May through October. Beyond October the road often becomes impassable and the river rises fast. Entry to Wunambal Gaambera Country requires a valid travel permit — sort it online before you go.
