Keystone Spring — Mojave Road Historic Water Source and Desert Crossroads

Point of Interest

Keystone Spring sits along the historic Mojave Road in the eastern section of Mojave National Preserve, roughly between Piute Gorge and the Lanfair Valley stretch. It’s marked on USGS topo maps and shows up in Mojave Road documentation going back to the Dennis Casebier trail guides — it served travelers, soldiers, and freighters moving through this brutal stretch of desert. The rocky draw that hides it is typical high Mojave terrain: creosote, volcanic cobble, and silence. Don’t expect a bubbling creek — flow is seasonal and unreliable for drinking without treatment.

This is a navigation and historical reference point more than a developed stop. No facilities, no signage worth relying on. 4WD is required to reach it — the Mojave Road is soft sand and rocky track through here. Run it dry season (Oct–May); summer heat in the Preserve is genuinely dangerous. Confirm water status in trip reports before banking on it.
