Mojave National Preserve — Piute Valley Road BLM Dispersed Camp
Pull off Piute Valley Road and you’ve got honest Mojave desert camping: creosote flats, distant volcanic ridgelines, zero facilities, zero neighbors on most nights. This is classic BLM dispersed territory on the eastern fringe of Mojave National Preserve — legal, free, and about as far from a KOA as you can get without a passport. Sites are flat and firm enough for most rigs, with enough space to swing a trailer if needed. Expect cold nights even in spring, and summer temps that’ll cook you alive above 100°F. No signage, no fire rings, no trash service — pack it in, pack it out.
Piute Valley Road is accessible from US-95 south of Needles. The road is mostly graded dirt and accessible to high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, though sandy sections can surprise you. Cell service is essentially gone once you leave the highway. No water anywhere in the corridor — carry at least two days’ supply. Peak season runs October through April; summer is survivable only for early-morning runners heading straight to Fort Piute.
