Fish River Canyon — Main Viewpoint at Hobas

Point of Interest

This is the anchor viewpoint for the Fish River Canyon rim track and one of the most dramatic natural landmarks on the African continent. The main lookout sits above the canyon’s widest section — roughly 27km across at the top — and on a clear morning you can see the river snaking through the gorge floor far below. There’s a stone viewing platform, a couple of signboards, and very little standing between you and a serious drop. No barriers worth trusting. Wildlife in the area includes kudu, klipspringer, and baboon. The canyon is the second-largest in the world after the Grand Canyon, and no amount of photos fully prepares you for the scale.

Access from Hobas Camp is a short sealed road. The viewpoint is open to day visitors with a park entry ticket. No shade on the platform — sunrise and late afternoon are the times to be here. Midday in summer is genuinely brutal. Wind is always present on the rim; secure loose gear before you step out of the cab.

Africa's Grand Canyon, raw and vertical.
