Hobas Campsite — Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park

Established Campground

Hobas sits on the plateau above the northern lip of Fish River Canyon, run by Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR). This is the launchpad for the famous five-day Fish River Canyon hiking trail and the logical overnight stop for overlanders doing the rim track from the north. The camp has ablution blocks with hot showers, flush toilets, a small kiosk, braai pits, and shaded sites — genuine infrastructure for Namibia. The canyon viewpoint is a short walk from camp and the sunset light on those orange walls will shut you up fast. Expect it full during dry-season peak (May–September) when the canyon hike permits are active.

Access is via the D601 gravel road off the B4 east of Seeheim — straightforward high-clearance 2WD territory in dry conditions. The gate controls entry to the viewpoint and campsite so don’t arrive after hours expecting to just roll in. Book through NWR Namibia ahead of time during peak season — walk-ins work in off-season but it’s a long drive to find out they’re full.

Canyon rim basecamp — no softer start exists.
