Ai-Ais Hotsprings Reserve — Fish River Canyon Rim Southern Flats Dispersed Camp
South of the main Hobas gate and well clear of the formal Ai-Ais resort perimeter, the open desert plains inside the Ai-Ais Richtersveld Transfrontier Park buffer zone offer legitimate dispersed camping on sandy to hard-packed ground. Quiver trees, sparse acacias, and the raw Karas Region silence are your company. This is no-frills Namibia — no shade structures, no ablutions, no fire rings. You bring everything and leave nothing. Elevation keeps nights genuinely cold, even in shoulder season. The canyon rim viewpoints are within a short drive north.
Access is via the D601 and connecting gravel spurs south of Hobas — high-clearance 4WD recommended as corrugations are relentless and sandy drainage crossings appear without warning. Confirm conditions and dispersed camping permissions with MEFT at Hobas or Ai-Ais camp offices before heading out — permit requirements and zone access in the transfrontier park shift seasonally. Avoid January–March: flash flooding in the canyon below can cut access roads.
Canyon rim silence, quiver trees, zero facilities.
