Arslanbob Walnut Forest — Jalal-Abad High Plateau Valley Floor Dispersed Camp
Arslanbob sits at roughly 1,800–2,200m in the Babash-Ata foothills of the western Tian Shan, and the dispersed camping along the valley floor tracks is as real as it gets in Kyrgyzstan. The walnut forest here isn’t a metaphor — it sprawls across thousands of hectares, and in late September the canopy goes amber and the ground smells like autumn and livestock. You can push a 4WD rig up the dirt tracks east of the village toward the waterfall trails and find flat ground among the trees, well away from the grazing herds. No formal facilities, no fee collected, no signage — just the forest, the creek noise, and the occasional shepherd on horseback wondering why you’re here.
Access from Jalalabad is roughly 70km via the A375 and then local dirt roads up into the valley. Surfaces are graded dirt to rough track depending on how far you push — high-clearance 4WD is the call once you leave the village. Best season is May–October; the forest road turns to mud soup in spring snowmelt and closes under winter snow. No cell service once you’re up in the trees.
Camp inside the world's largest walnut forest.
