Well 51 — Canning Stock Route Northern Gateway Cattle Bore
Well 51 is a documented, named heritage bore on the Canning Stock Route — one of the original drover watering points hand-dug in the early 1900s. By the time you roll in here from the south, you’ve crossed the Gibson–Great Sandy divide and the character of the track shifts noticeably: the dunes ease, the country opens, and the sense of ‘you’re through it’ hits hard. The bore structure itself is partly intact and the surrounding claypan flat gives the place a wide, exposed feel that’s unmistakably remote WA outback.
This section of CSR sits within Rudall River National Park (Karlamilyi) managed by DBCA WA. No facilities. No water you can rely on from the bore without testing. The track in from the south requires 4WD and solid sand-driving skills — tyre deflation to 18–22 psi is standard through the dune fields. Best run May through August. Self-sufficient fuel and water mandatory from Newman or Wiluna.
Last bore before Rudall River country.
