Carcross Desert Campground — Carcross Commons Recreation Area

Established Campground

Carcross Desert sits on the southern shore of Bennett Lake, and this campground puts you right in that sandy, surreal landscape — dunes flanked by boreal scrub, with the Nares Mountain backdrop. Sites are pull-through and back-in on gravel, with fire rings, picnic tables, and pit toilets maintained by the Yukon Government. It’s a small operation — fills up in July and August with Chilkoot Trail finishers coming off the train from Bennett and overlanders running the South Klondike. Quiet shoulder season from late August onward.

Access is paved right off the Alaska Highway connector through Carcross. Cell signal is spotty but exists near the village. Stock up in Whitehorse before heading south — Carcross has limited supplies. Confirm current rates and availability with Yukon Parks, as this corridor sees increasing traffic with the growing popularity of the Klondike and Chilkoot routes.
