Kruger National Park — Limpopo River Floodplain Dispersed Camp near Pafuri

Dispersed Camping

Pafuri’s northern wilderness zone sits where Zimbabwe, Mozambique, and South Africa collide, and the Limpopo River floodplain here is as raw as Kruger gets. SANParks permits designated wilderness camping in this sector — think sand, fever tree groves, hornbills screaming overhead, and lion tracks in the morning. No fences. No facilities. This is the real deal. Elephant traffic through camp is not unusual; hippo from the river even less so. You sleep with your windows cracked and your nerves on edge. Capacity is strictly limited and permits are mandatory through SANParks.

Access is via the Pafuri Gate from the north (Limpopo / Zimbabwe border road) or through Kruger on a long dirt run from Mopani or Letaba. 4WD strongly recommended in wet season — the Limpopo basin floods hard and fast. Permits must be pre-booked through SANParks online; walk-ins are not granted for wilderness zones. Best April through October when roads dry out and wildlife congregates near water.
