Hardknott Forest — Eskdale Valley Floor Dispersed Camp
Eskdale’s broad lower valley offers a handful of verifiable rough pull-offs and forestry edge spots along the minor road between Boot and Hardknott Pass that experienced overlanders use for a night before tackling the 1-in-3 gradients at first light. The valley floor sits under open sky with the Scafell group looming north and the fells closing in on both sides — proper Lakeland atmosphere. No facilities, no signs saying you’re welcome, but no signs saying you’re not either. Keep it low-key, leave nothing, and you’ll be fine.
Access is via the single-track road through Eskdale from the A595 at Holmrook or via the Wrynose and Hardknott passes themselves. Surface is narrow paved lane to the valley floor; pull-offs are grass and stone. The road to Hardknott Pass is officially one of England’s steepest — 30% gradients and blind hairpins — unsuitable for caravans and any vehicle with low power-to-weight ratio. Best May through October. Winter snowfall can close the pass without warning.
Stage here before the beast of Hardknott.
