Pie Town — Continental Divide Crossroads and Overland Resupply Stop
Pie Town is one of those places the maps make look like nothing but overlanders talk about like a checkpoint in a religion. The village straddles the Continental Divide at roughly 7,800 feet and sits directly on the Trans-America Trail corridor. The Pie-O-Neer Café is the anchor — real pie, real coffee, cash-friendly, and the kind of place where you’ll swap intel with other TAT riders and 4×4 crews. The Toaster House is a legendary hiker/biker hostel that occasionally shelters overlanders too. Fuel is not available here — plan accordingly from Quemado (25 miles west) or Datil (20 miles east).
The surrounding terrain is open high-desert plateau with piñon-juniper cover. Dirt roads in and out are generally passable for high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions but turn slick fast when wet. Cell signal is essentially nonexistent. If you’re running the TAT through the Gila corridor, Pie Town is your last reliable stop before things get genuinely remote.
Pie, the CDT, and the TAT cross right here.
