Datil Well Campground — Cibola National Forest
Datil Well sits at the eastern edge of the Plains of San Agustin, a few miles west of the tiny village of Datil on US-60. Named for the historic well that once watered cattle drives, this developed BLM campground has 22 sites with picnic tables, fire rings, vault toilets, and a hand-pump water source. Shade comes from juniper and piñon. Elevation is around 7,500 feet, so nights are cool even in summer. It draws a mix of overlanders running the TAT, hunters in fall, and astronomers chasing the famously dark skies over the Plains of San Agustin.
Access is paved all the way from US-60 — no clearance required to get in, though your onward TAT routing gets progressively rougher from here. No hookups, no dump station. Stay limit is 14 days. Free to camp. Cell service is essentially nonexistent. Water availability from the hand pump can vary — carry your own as backup.
