Padre Island National Seashore Beach Drive
60+ miles of barrier island beach driving
Padre Island National Seashore’s beach drive runs over 60 miles down the longest undeveloped barrier island coastline in the world. The packed sand highway starts at the visitor center and stretches southeast to Mansfield Channel, passing the famous Malaquite Beach area and continuing into increasingly remote territory where sea turtle nests dot the dunes and shipwrecks emerge from shifting sands at low tide.
This is moderate 4WD territory that requires deflated tires (15-20 PSI), experience reading sand conditions, and respect for tides. Stock 4WD vehicles handle it fine with proper preparation, but soft sand pockets and washouts catch rookies regularly. Spring through fall offers the best conditions, though summer brings crowds. No permits needed, but camping requires backcountry sites 5+ miles from pavement. You’ll earn solitude, world-class surf fishing, and some of the darkest night skies on the Texas coast.
